Recycling at Standard 5 & 10
It is illegal in California to dispose of batteries in the trash. We now accept used batteries for recycling. Bring in any size household battery, including alkaline, rechargeable and cell phone batteries. In addition, we now take all fluorescent tubes up to 4 feet in length for recycling. Why recycle batteries? Batteries contain a variety of chemicals, some of which include mercury, zinc, lead, and copper. When deposited in landfills, batteries may leach a variety of chemicals into soil and groundwater. In addition, when batteries are incinerated, these chemicals may disperse into the atmosphere. Why recycle fluorescent tubes?
Mercury in fluorescent tubes occurs as a very fine dust. When tubes are discarded in landfill, the mercury can permeate air, water and soil and cause a variety of symptoms ranging from mild to extremely serious. There are even studies linking mercury to autism. |
